The Desart Art Centre Conference is an annual two-day closed event for Desart member art centre managers, directors, artists and art workers.

It’s an opportunity for art centres to connect with each other and with Desart staff, guest speakers, and staff of government agencies as well as other industry support organisations. The conference is a platform for peer-to peer learning and access to industry consultants plus experts for our member art centres. The conference program is designed to offer art centre staff, directors and arts workers a culturally safe space to celebrate and share their successes and experiential learnings, and to discuss and work towards solutions to pressing issues.

In 2018, Desart celebrates 25 Years of supporting the Aboriginal Art Centres of Central Australia, an achievement we can all reflect on with pride and celebrate together. Key highlights from this year’s conference program included:

  • the APY Art Collective celebrating their regional gallery opening in Sydney,
  • Nici Cumpston celebrating the unity and space that Tarnanthi brings to the industry.
  • Philip Watkins and Hetti Perkins discussing their key recommendations made to the Northern Territory Government for the National Indigenous Gallery being put forward for Alice Springs.
  • The Desart Art Worker Program celebrating 10 Years of delivery and employment outcomes

Themes of provenance, innovation and partnerships were prevalent and reflected upon by all in attendance.
