Desert Mob 2020, for artists, arts workers and arts lovers. A total immersion in the artwork and stories of Aboriginal art from the desert.

Desert Mob 2020 – celebrating 30 years!

For 30 years, Desert Mob has been the leading celebration of Aboriginal artists living across the vast region of Central Australia where the contemporary Aboriginal art movement was born.

With official 30th celebrations on hold until 2021 due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, the Desert Mob 2020 experience will be presented across a mix of digital and traditional platforms. Over several days art lovers can visit the exhibition online or in-person and immerse themselves in the dynamic and accessible program of online events, bringing the celebration of Central Australian Aboriginal Art to everyone.

Exhibition 11 September – 25 October, Araluen Arts Centre and online at www.araluenartscentre.nt.gov.au

This year’s Desert Mob Exhibition promises to continue to be a testament to tradition and a testing ground for experimentation and innovation in contemporary Aboriginal art.

The exhibition presents paintings, sculpture, weaving, wood carving, prints, photography and works on paper by established and emerging artists.

Online sales will begin at 9am on Saturday 11 September, with free ticketed public viewings from 1 – 8pm. The exhibition will continue until Sunday 25th October at Araluen Arts Centre.

Symposium 4 – 11 September, online at www.desart.com.au

This year’s digital Desert Mob Symposium saw Desart take to the road to record the stories of the regions to bring to life online. The discussions explore achievements, developments and contemporary practice from our resilient and innovative art centres. The Symposium will run over seven days, with new topics and presentations released each day, starting on Friday 4th September.

MarketPlace 12 – 19 September, online at www.desart.com.au

The MarketPlace will emanate the same amount of joyful craziness as the physical experience brings, but this year it will be through your screen. Providing an accessible and dynamic online platform instead, there will still be a huge number of artworks to trawl through from over 30 Central Australian Art Centres continuing for over a week.

Desart and all our member art centres thank you for your ongoing virtual support at this time.

Desert Mob is presented in partnership with Araluen Arts Centre.
