Cornelius Ebatarinja,
‘Because they are always here’, Winner, Desart Photography Prize 2019

Desart congratulates Cornelius Ebatarinja of Yarrenyty Arltere Artists as the winner of the Desart Photography Prize 2019, with his moving entry ‘Because they are always here’.

Because they are always here, those kids, hanging around in the art room, playing on the play ground, watching their grandmothers and mother sewing, learning because they are always here, I thought to take a photo of them.

Conceived in 2012 to encourage Aboriginal art workers to use digital cameras in their art centres, today the Desart photography Prize showcases extraordinary work by Aboriginal men, women, young, senior, established and emerging artists working within the Desart membership. This year the prize was judged by esteemed visual artist, curator, writer and academic Brenda L. Croft and Iltja Ntjarra Many Hands Assistant Manager and emerging curator Marisa Maher.
