Sonya Murphy Napaljarri

Sonya Murphy Napaljarri grew up in Mungkarta, 90km south-west of Tennant Creek. From her father’s side, she belongs to the Waramungu language group, and from her mother’s side, the Warlpiri and Kaytetye language groups. Sonya learned to paint watching her grandmother in the late 1990s. Sonya would watch her paint bush foods and created similar works, though now Sonya prefers to paint the places where these bush tuckers are found, in her own style.

Artist statement

Sandhills are a good area to get goanna, bush tucker and bush medicine. My family are artists and when we go out hunting or with family we get stories from them. Sandhills make me think of my family that I lost, the old people who I used to go out bush with. Every time when I see sandhills it reminds me of my grandma and my aunties that are passed away. My grandma taught me to paint. She was teaching me how to do bush fruits first, but now I do places, like sandhills, where we get those foods from.
