Adrian Jangala Robertson

Adrian Jangala Robertson was born at Papunya. As a boy attending school in Papunya, Adrian remembers Geoff Bardon working as a schoolteacher alongside the early Western Desert painters. He has since enjoyed strong artistic influences throughout his life including his fathers’ brother, the late Darby Ross Jampijinpa and his mother, the late Eunice Napangardi. It is Napangardi’s country, Yalpirakinu, that Adrian paints. His country travels from west of Walungurru through Karku at Nyirrpi to Warlurkurlangu at Yuendumu. Adrian joined Bindi Mwerre Anthurre Artists in 2002 and won the prestigious Alice Prize in 2022 and the Telstra General Painting Award at the 2020 National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA).

Artist statement

Adrian Jangala Robertson’s work refers to the desert mountains, ridges and trees which are part of his mother’s country, Yalpirakinu. Adrian captures the sweep of his country and his family through brushwork that is loaded with energy, drama, and memories; reworking, pushing and pulling the image to completion. Adrian’s portraits often reflect his mother and father.
