Maureen Nelson
Maureen Nelson was born in Amata Community hospital on the APY Lands of South Australia and is the eldest daughter of Pitjantjatjara artist Rene Nelson. Working in sculpture and on canvas, Maureen uses a strong, vibrant colour palette to paint the landscapes of Pukurra, the tali (sandhill) Country of her father and grandfather. She has developed her own distinct painting style to depict its significant landmarks.
Artist statement
Pirrulyungkanya is on the other side of Irrunytju and is my father’s Country. There is a homeland there and as a child I would stay there with my parents and extended family, learning much about the land and its stories.
